The River

A boat trip on Bangkok's Chao Phraya river is always interesting...consider this typical scene shot on the river near the island of Koh Kret.

Here is a string of sand-barges being towed downstream to Bangkok from a sand mining operation up near the ancient city of Ayutthaya. A lot of sand is required in Bangkok for the production of concrete which is the main material used in the building construction industry.

Numerous old buildings, on rickety wooden stilts, line both banks and spill out onto the water. There is talk of reclaiming some sections of bank to create a long walkway, so pedestrians can regain some lost access to the river, but there has not been a lot of apparent progress.

There is this Buddhist temple in Thonburi [over the river from Bangkok] where the monks apparently have access to industrial quantities of "special" water...so much of this water that they  administer it to acolytes  under pressure through a garden hose.

Here you see that several gals in very wet sarongs are getting the full treatment!

This regal-looking brute is Cyrtacanthacris tatarica linnaeus [aka Migratory Bird Locust]...she is big, and flies with precision like a small bird. She sometimes sits, motionless, on a branch for hours.

Mobile vendors are still a common sight in Bangkok. I doubt this man is rich but he will be doing well enough to support himself, and possibly his family.

Thailand is said to have Zero unemployment, which is a good thing because there are no unemployment safety nets provided by the State.

In fact, Thailand imports cheap labour, mainly from Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos...perhaps 2 million people.

The Tiger goes "oink"

SriRacha Tiger Park, about 80km SE of Bangkok, has a successful Tiger breeding program. One of the techniques they use is to have new-born Tiger kittens wet-nursed by pig sows that have just delivered a litter.

It seems some marketing genius then came up with the idea that it might be a tourist attraction to have the tigress look after some of the new-born piglets. I presume there was some trial&error involved, which may have been problematic for test piglets, but a breakthrough occurred when someone had a light-bulb moment and suggested dressing the piglets in tiger-skin vests.
